The Peckham Echo

 Derek Trotter, released yesterday

Local Man Released Without Charge

A local business man was released from police custody yesterday afternoon without being charged.

Derek Trotter, 35 from Dockside Estate, Peckham was arrested earlier yesterday afternoon in connection with a stolen microwave oven, which was believed to have been stolen from the back of a lorry in Lewisham Grove yesterday morning.

Mr Trotter's younger brother and grandfather were also held by police but were released without charge just a few short hours later.

Peckham police's Detective Inspector, Mr Slater embarrassingly told reporters last night, " We did not arrest a man earlier this afternoon as many of you seem to think, we simply brought in Mr Trotter to help us with our enquiries. We have yet to find the person we are looking for but our enquiries will continue."

Mr Slater added, " We would ask anyone to come forward and contact us if they have any further information which might help us at this time. For the time being we have ruled out anyone who is a 6 ft 7in dwarf, aged between 15 and 50, a white or black male with oriental features and who where's a deaf aid, from this crime."

There does seem some irregularities to this case though, Peckham police's assistant commissioner yesterday issued a statement saying that the microwave thief had been caught and would be charged later that evening. For now, it seems as though the police have yet to capture the man they are looking for. Leaving the real microwave thief still at large.
